The problem of plastic waste has come to the forefront of public attention in recent years, with plastic bottles clogging our waterways and piling up into giant floating islands in the ocean.
Now scientists and entrepreneurs around the world are trying to find solutions and find new ways to recycle plastic waste. Premiumropes is no exception and recently released a line of Eco ropes made from recycled polyester.
Premiumropes is known for its extensive library of splicing instructional videos, its best-selling book, Modern Rope Splicing, and its mobile app with step-by-step instructions. The Amsterdam-based rope manufacturer and rigging shop is also renowned for product quality and innovation. The latest development is the launch of a range of eco-ropes using recycled polyester and bio-based Dyneema.
Polyester is the most popular rope material due to its low price, good grip and durability. Depending on the desired properties of the production line, polyester can be used as a core or cover material.
PET (which stands for polyethylene terephthalate) is the most common form of polyester. PET is used throughout the world to produce packaging for food and household products such as plastic bottles. Unlike some other plastics, PET is completely recyclable.
Depending on the purity of the material, recycled PET (rPET) can be recycled into bottles and beverage packaging or used to make polyester textiles. Most of the world’s recycled PET comes from PET bottles.
The first step is to collect plastic materials from a variety of sources, including industrial waste, household trash bins and environmental cleanup projects. The material must be sorted, washed and dried to remove impurities.
The material is then crushed into particles, which are then washed and dried to form a clean substrate.
The PET pellets are then heated and spun to form threads. These fibers are combined together to form yarn, which is used to make rope.
Finally, spools of recycled polyester yarn are fed into specialized knitting machines to produce the Premiumropes Eco range.
The Eco Cruiser is the entry level product in the Eco range and features a PET core and lid. Offering the same benefits as other double braided polyester ropes, this range is soft to the touch, durable, UV resistant and very affordable. The Eco Cruiser comes in a variety of attractive colors and a modern ‘hybrid’ design.
The Eco Cup takes performance a step further than the Eco Cruiser with its rPET cover and low-stretch Stirotex core. Stirotex is a private label of Premiumropes UHMWPE, known for its incredible strength, low elongation and UV resistance. The Eco Cup is equivalent to the already successful S Cup.
Eco Dock is the first line of Premium ropes made from 100% recycled plastic. Ideal for mooring and anchoring. Eco Dock has good elongation properties and can absorb shock loads in adverse weather conditions.
This 24-ply single braid is made from rPET fiber. The hollow braided design makes it easy to connect the fender line and attach it to the fence.
With the launch of the Eco range, Premiumropes is already leading the way in the production of high quality yacht ropes from recycled materials. But the development doesn’t stop there! The Amsterdam-based rope manufacturer is constantly pushing boundaries and finding new opportunities to reduce waste and make the production chain more circular.
